Frequently Asked Questions

Common Pool Care Questions

You should test your pool water 2–3 times per week during the swim season, and more frequently during periods of heavy pool usage or extreme summer heat.

For safe, balanced water, aim for the following targets:

  • Free Chlorine: 1.0 – 3.0 ppm (parts per million)
  • pH Balance: 7.2 – 7.8 (pH below 7.2 is acidic and can corrode equipment; pH above 7.8 is too alkaline, causing scaling and reducing chlorine effectiveness)
  • Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm

Most salt chlorine generators operate most efficiently with a salt concentration between 2,700 and 3,400 ppm, with an ideal target of 3,200 ppm.

It is best practice to inspect the salt cell every 3 months. Clean the cell with a mild acid solution only if you see calcium scale buildup on the plates. Most pools only require 1–2 cleanings per year.

  • Sand and DE Filters: Backwash the filter whenever the pressure gauge reads 8 to 10 psi higher than its clean startup pressure.
  • Cartridge Filters: Remove and spray down the cartridge elements every 4 to 6 weeks, or when the pressure increases 8 to 10 psi.

Cloudy or green water is typically caused by low chlorine levels, poor water filtration, or the onset of algae growth. High pH levels (above 8.0) can also make chlorine ineffective, causing minerals to fall out of solution and cloud the water.

To correct this, test and balance the chemicals, shock the pool, run the filter continuously, and apply a quality algaecide if needed.

Accidents happen, and there's no need to panic. Ask swimmers to exit the water, test the free chlorine level, and add pool shock (chlorine) if the sanitizer level is low. Keep the filtration system running for several hours. Proper sanitization and balanced water chemistry will quickly neutralize the waste and make the pool safe to swim in again.

While DIY maintenance is a viable option for some homeowners, hiring a professional pool service offers significant advantages:

  • Consistent Water Quality: Professional testing prevents dangerous chemical imbalances and algae outbreaks.
  • Equipment Protection: Certified pool operators can spot early signs of motor, plumbing, or heater failures, saving you money on major replacements.
  • Peace of Mind: We take care of the labor and scheduling so you can simply relax and enjoy your swimming season.
